McKim, Mead, and White
(Redirected from Charles Follen McKim)
McKim, Mead, and White was the architectural firm that designed the Columbia Morningside Heights campus master plan, as well as a significant number of individual buildings on the campus itself, including some that were never built. Many of MM&W's campus buildings even failed to conform to their original campus plan or were built in compliance with new plans, particularly those that now grace the perimeter of South Field.
As Columbia philosophy professor F. J. E. Woodbridge once dryly noted, "The Cathedral of Chartres was built by the spirit of the Virgin; the University of Virginia was built by the vision of Thomas Jefferson; Columbia was built by... McKim, Mead, and White."[1]
