He was reluctant to take on the role of Dean, and happy to return to his quiet life of teaching "public law and government". He was also reportedly "firm in the face of McCarthyism," as opposed to [[University President]] [[Grayson Kirk]], who was a fan of ferreting out suspected Columbia communists.
