'''Carlton Joseph Huntley Hayes''' [[Columbia College|CC]] [[1904]] [[PhD]] '?? was one of the most preeminent Columbia historians of the first half of the 20th century. A specialist in modern Europe, he served in military intelligence during the [[First World War]], before being named as a full professor in [[1919]]. He served as US ambassador to Spain during the Second World War. Many believed he was far too cozy with the Franco regime at the time.
