At Columbia, he studied for his [[BA]] and MA in [[German]], but he switched to [[anthropology]] after realizing his linguistic interests were broader. Anthro don [[Franz Boas]], who had brought linguistics under the purview of his department at that time, proved an influential mentor to him.
