Richard Hofstadter PhD '45 was an influential public intellectual and DeWitt Clinton Professor of American History.
He gave the commencement address in 1968 in the wake of that year's tumultuous protests. Later, he was the graduate dissertation supervisor of Eric Foner, who later took over Hofstadter's chair.
