The annual Liberty Cup football game is played between Columbia and crosstown rival Fordham University - the only two NCAA Division 1 football programs in New York City. This tradition was begun in 2002 to commemorate the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack which killed significant numbers of alumni from both schools.
