I'm trying to update the school colors page a bit. I'd really like to add something similar to Templates:Shades of blue if possible. It appears to be a built in template of sorts. Any ideas? Also, I've dug up a lot of history on the University Shield and generated an arguably more 'accurate' high-res graphic. :Thanks for your continuing contributions! For the school colors article, I don't think there's any need to use a template. In order to use the "Shades of blue" template, we'd have to import a whole load of other templates. I don't think it's worth the effort, but feel free to have a go. However, a more appropriate solution is probably a simple table, like the one I just created over at school colors. What do you think? 21:43, 30 March 2008 (EDT)

If you type in a single word in the url field, it automatically recognizes the appropriate capitalization and redirects you as appropriate. If you type in two words, it automatically converts a space to an underscore. If you type in two words, it also automatically converts the first letter of the first word to uppercase. Should it therefore not also be possible to capitalize the second word or not do so, either way, so as to automatically redirect? This just came up with the Applied math and Applied Math redirects - surely it's not necessary to create a redirect for all such articles. Another example: Helvidius Group is a page, but Helvidius group doesn't exist. Can it be automated so that the latter would point to the former rather than requiring a redirect? • are you sure it's about the strike? i thought it was unrelated. Foobar 15:09, 13 November 2007 (EST)
 • Uh, I just assumed it was about the strike. I really have no idea though, probably because I'm a right-wing oppressor.  − Reaganaut  15:31, 13 November 2007 (EST)

Restaurant articles

Hey, maybe we could try integrating this into restaurant articles? http://wikicu.com/Template:Infobox_restaurant

Also, thanks for cleaning up my grammar! Absentminded 11:37, 8 April 2007 (EDT)

have you looked at http://hungrycu.com/ ? it seems to duplicate some of the wikicu restaurant section's efforts, as well as look-n-feel. should one be merged? or destroyed? we could just link to hungrycu. your thoughts? Umlund 14:22, 18 September 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for pointing out that site. It looks suspiciously similar to the WikiCU map of restaurants and bars! I would be inclined to keep our articles because we've already created them, they're freely editable, and are free of any copyright restrictions (technically they're under the GNU FDL). But, absolutely, let's link to "the hungry lion" just as we generally link to MenuPages for menus and NYC DOH for info about health violations.  − Reaganaut  15:04, 18 September 2007 (EDT)

Oooooh! So that's how you do that. Can you recommend a good tutorial on MediaWiki? I looked at their manual and found it hard to find what I wanted. Nonsensical 14:34, 12 May 2007 (EDT)

Unfortunately I don't know of any good MediaWiki guides... Everything I know, I learned here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing That's probably the guide you were referring to though.  − Reaganaut  14:48, 12 May 2007 (EDT)

Reaganaut, I notice you're editing the Suicide article at 4 in the morning. Is there something we need to talk about? Nonsensical 04:06, 25 May 2007 (EDT)

spam from nonregistered users

edits by the nonregistered was enabled a few weeks ago. this seems to be highly correlated with:

 1. sorority shenanegans and
 2. viagra/vioxx spam.

i therefore request disabling edits without registering. 128.59.150.168 11:37, 1 June 2007 (EDT)

mmmm, irony. --216.6.170.21 00:05, 2 June 2007 (EDT)
Yes, I've seen all that spam. I think I will disable edits by unregistered users, but first, does anyone else have an opinion about this?  − Reaganaut  09:06, 2 June 2007 (EDT)
As long as we monitor the site, I think unregistered users should be able to make edits. WhatYouKnowAboutThat 07:51, 4 June 2007 (EDT)
I think edits by unregistered users is fine. We catch it pretty fast and it's not that frequent. I'd rather leave it open with the hope of attracting new users with ease of editing. --Nonsensical 10:26, 4 June 2007 (EDT)
OK, as long as I'm not the only one looking out for spam, I'm happy to continue to allow edits by unregistered users. Thanks!  − Reaganaut  17:28, 4 June 2007 (EDT)

Hmmm, things are worsening.  − Reaganaut  19:10, 10 June 2007 (EDT)

Absolutley. if you want this site to continute being useful, please disable edits from nonregistered users. you might want to consider a captcha if it continues. Foobar 21:16, 10 June 2007 (EDT)
What's a captcha? Are things really getting that bad? Is there a way to allow unregistered users as long as they're on campus? --Nonsensical 22:03, 10 June 2007 (EDT)
nonsensical:

1) google still works 2) check the recent changes page, or set up an RSS feed, to watch the spam growing in frequency. Foobar 22:42, 10 June 2007 (EDT)

Okay, there's no need to get all condescending about it. So I'd rather have someone describe a captcha to me in a sentence or two than go look on wikipedia and read through a long article about it... sue me. And I'm aware of the recent changes page; I meant it more rhetorically. I've seen the spam, it just seems to me that it's being caught (props to Reaganaut, usually) within a matter of hours most of the time and doesn't seem to be really doing any permanent damage to the site's content. --Nonsensical 23:27, 10 June 2007 (EDT)
NS: sorry to come off condescending. i see the phrase "GSW" so many times now i forget it comes off snarky Foobar 15:54, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

I've now disabled edits by unregistered users. Thanks to those who helped me swiftly reverse/delete the recent tide of spam. Unfortunately the site had been getting more and more of it every day.  − Reaganaut  12:04, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

Is there a way you can allow unregistered users to post as long as they have a Columbia IP? It may not be so useful over the summer, but I feel like there's potential for a spike in usership when the school year starts and unregistered participation could facilitate that. --Nonsensical 12:41, 12 June 2007 (EDT)
Interesting idea. I'll look into it.  − Reaganaut  13:21, 12 June 2007 (EDT)
Thanks! I think it's a good idea to disable IP-only edits Foobar 15:54, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

Tone

You gotta let me know if the tone of my articles / edits needs to be scaled back. Ever since I graduated, I've gotten about twice as angry and four times as sarcastic. Ttan 19:09, 17 October 2007 (EDT)

Uh, I think your tone is fine! If anything, I would have thought leaving Columbia is a pleasant depoliticizing experience :)  − Reaganaut  19:12, 17 October 2007 (EDT)
Yep. I now make comments / remarks I normally wouldnt. Heh. Ttan 22:59, 17 October 2007 (EDT)
As if being at Columbia could be a normal state of affairs!  − Reaganaut  23:01, 17 October 2007 (EDT)

Capitalis(z)ation

If you type in a single word in the url field, it automatically recognizes the appropriate capitalization and redirects you as appropriate.
