.
The Empire State Building is that big tall building located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. For something like $25 a pop, first-year students and tourists from around the world can take a ride to the top and view Manhattan from about 1,400 ft up. The view is nice. And cold. And probably worth $25. But it's definitely more fun to sneak to the roof of IAB. Don't forget to bring a camera.
If you're a lucky John Jay resident, you can use the view of the ESB out your window for inspiration. Or despair when they turn off the lights at 2 a.m and your all-nighter is barely getting started.
Lighting
The Empire State Building is famous, among other reasons[1], for its lighting. Each night the building lights up in different colors in honor of various events, organizations, etc. If you're ever wondering what's being honored, you can check the official lighting schedule.
In 2009, 2010, and 2011, the building was lit up blue and white in honor of Columbia' commencement.[2]
