Lawrence H. Chamberlain was Dean of Columbia College through most of the 1950s.
He was reluctant to take on the role of Dean, and happy to return to his quiet life of teaching "public law and government". He was also reportedly "firm in the face of McCarthyism," as opposed to University President Grayson Kirk, who was a fan of ferreting out suspected Columbia communists. He also toyed with what he called "half-baked" ideas like a Columbia College "Citizenship Training Center" and interdepartmental majors.[1]
