A Salutatorian, judged to be the second most worthy degree candidate in his or her school's respective graduating class by GPA and other measures, and, at least at Columbia College, gives the speech at Class Day, rather than the Valedictorian. A possible explanation for this may be that often the Valedictorian is just too much of a nerd. Or it might be that the terms used to be reversed; at least one Spec article noted that Nicholas Murray Butler was both "Greek salutatorian" of his year and "top of his class".
