- 2001: Terrorist attacks destroy the World Trade Center. Students gather to watch billowing smoke from high points such as the East Campus tower. The front gates are also closed, something that usually only occurs during University Commencement. Several alumni are among the thousands killed; there is now a memorial to them on Van Am Quad.
- 2008: Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain make a joint visit to campus as part of the ServiceNation Presidential Candidates Forum
