The LLD is a degree given in the field of Law. The acronym stands for legum doctor. The double-L survives from old practice at the University of Cambridge to teach both Canon Law and Civil Law, thus denoting the plurality of the legum, thus translating as "Doctor of Laws" as opposed to "Doctor of Law". The degree is only awarded in honoris causa in the US.
