The Digital Humanities Center (DHC), formerly known as the Electronic Text Service, is the sub-library in Butler Library with lots of scanners and computers with optical character recognition (OCR) software.

The DHC provides extensive services to support researchers in the humanities working with digital texts, still and moving images, and other materials. As of spring 2013, it is allegedly in the midst of a modernization project.

Facilities

The DHC is located in 305 Butler and its facilities include:

  • archiving software
  • media editing software
  • book-to-text devices

A sign out front says you have to show your ID to the desk attendant to enter (whyyyy?) but that rarely occurs in practice.

There is a room in the east hallway of Butler 3rd floor with additional DIY scanners that is technically part of the DHC.

Hours and contact info

The equipment here is rarely fully used. Since it's out of the way, DHC is a good spot for empty computers in Butler...when it's open.

Butler reference service is offered at this desk from 11:00 to 1:00 on weekdays except during spring break and intersession. You can call the DHC at 212-854-7547 during open hours to reserve scanners and digital video editing machines.

Typical semester hours:

Mon Tues Wed Thurs Fri Sat Sun
11am - 6pm 11am - 9pm 11am - 6pm 12pm - 6pm
