PorColombia Mission Statement
“PorColombia is an international organization that seeks to unite students of Colombian Heritage and students interested in learning about Colombia. With chapters in different universities across the United States and Canada, PorColombia creates and supports a well-established network of students, alumni, mentors, and professionals with substantial involvement on academic, social, cultural, and philanthropic activities. The Columbia PorColombia chapter seeks to educate the student body and the outside community about Colombian culture, politics, and the country’s rich heritage through social events, discussions, and city outings. We aim to educate and raise awareness of present and future opportunities to build from abroad a stronger, safer, and dynamic Colombia.”
Overview
Columbia PorColombia exists in order to provide a space for Colombian and Latino culture at Columbia University, the Morningside Heights community and beyond. We are a group of Columbia University students who are interested in Colombian and culture, as well as providing a space for the Latino community to come together on campus.. We provide events on campus that foster community, dialogue and celebration of Colombia culture.
We are NOT an exclusively Colombian club and accept any members who are interested in our culture and Latino culture in general. Many of our members are from other countries, including Ecuador and Venezuela.
Events
Columbia PorColombia's events aim to bring the Latino community together and express Colombian culture and heritage. These informal reunions allow Latinos to discuss their cultures on campus, and we also incorporate aspects of Colombian culture, especially through native foods like arepas and snacks like arequipe. In Spring 2014, we hope to expand and work with other clubs to create more interactive events, as well as continuing to promote our reunions with other cultural themes, like the game of parques.
Get Involved
Getting involved is super easy and can be as time consuming as you want to make it! From joining our General Body and coming to as many events as you want, to becoming part of our executive board, there is plenty of space for any student hoping to learn more about Colombian culture.
