Peter Nason GS '15 is the President-elect of the General Studies Student Council. He is presumably the only current student at Columbia with proportionate dwarfism. Nason appears to command a loose cadre of Milvets though so don't joke about it with him unless asked.
Like his predecessor Hannah Germond, he served as First Year Class President (although presumably a first year in credit load, he had already been at GS for several years).
GSSC Presidency
Nason declared his candidacy in March 2014. Upon the filing deadline, it was found that he was the only student running for the position. However, uncontested elections for GSSC President have (since 2012) required a special election after spring elections. In light of this, Joshua Dominic - a first year GSSC Four Council Representative - was permitted to file his candidacy several days after the deadline.
In an interview with the Spectator's editorial board, Nason stated that he wanted to:
- improve community both within the GS student body and the University as a whole -- "He proposed allowing GS students to attend first-year and sophomore formals and strengthening connections between GSSC and student groups like the Columbia University Family Support Network and MilVets."
- provide more community spaces for students
- improve financial aid for GS students -- "Nason suggested holding more fundraisers to raise money for GS-specific financial aid and proposed a resolution that would equalize financial assistance the school receives from the federal government with the other undergraduate schools."
- and create more transparency within the council.
In April 2014, Nason beat Dominic with 63 percent of the 339 votes cast in the election.
