Columbia Model United Nations is a student club that allows students to debate in an environment simulating the United Nations. This allows students to explore international politics from a variety of angles. The Columbia chapter holds a strong reputation on the national circuit, with its traveling team winning 5 team awards and over 40 individual awards in the 2006-2007 academic year, and its two prestigious conferences hosted on campus, CMUNCE and CMUNNY.

CMUN is a member of the Columbia Political Union, through which it jointly hosts guest speakers, discussion panels, and other politically oriented events.

Activities

  • A CMUN delegation goes to several intercollegiate Model UN conferences every year, where they participate in committee simulations. During the 2006-2007 academic year, CMUN attended 8 conferences and won 4 "best small delegation" awards, one "outstanding small delegation" award, and over 40 individual awards. In the coming year, CMUN anticipates going to conferences at Yale, Georgetown, Penn, McGill, Princeton, Harvard, UChicago, World MUN, Berkeley, and UVA.
  • CMUN also allows students to participate in Columbia's student-run high school conference, CMUNCE, and its college conference, CMUNNY.
  • CMUN hosts Educational Simulations (ESims), a day-long Model UN conference which allows New York City high school students to debate for free.
  • CMUN hosts study breaks, dinners, and other social events at which the club members of the club can socialize with each other.

History

The members of CMUN believe that the 2006-2007 school year was especially significant for their club. Finally, the club introduced the Educational Simulations program (ESims) described above. The club hopes to continue hosting such programs in the coming years.
