The Altar Boy joke was told at the Liberty Cup football game against Fordham in 2002 when the marching band made a less than subtle reference to the ongoing sexual abuse scandal in American catholic parishes with a joke in their half time script about the Fordham team "going down" in the match against Columbia "like an altar boy." The joke prompted cries of outrage.
Andy Hao, CC '05, author of the script, faced off against William Donohue, head of the Catholic League on Phil Donahue's MSNBC show.
