The New Student Orientation Program takes up your first week at Columbia. There are no classes, but lots of events. Some of them are "mandatory." NSOP once included an event called "CUnity," which involved rotating small social circles and theoretically meeting lots of people. After the organizers realized no one really made lasting friendships this way, it was eschewed.
