Sidney Morgenbesser JTS '?? was a witty scholar (see his Wikipedia page for some of his better-known quotations) and officially the John Dewey Professor of Philosophy. He arrived at Columbia as a lecturer in 1953, and ascended to the Dewey chair in 1975. He published little, but was a popular teacher, winning the Mark Van Doren Award (1998) and the Great Teacher Award (1982).
