His novel Johnny One-Eye features a protagonist who was a student at Revolutionary King's College and vignettes of George Washington's stepson, John Parke Custis, who was once in attendance there. Alexander Hamilton is also a character.
In college, Charyn studied history and comparative literature, focusing in Russian. He dedicated his novel to legendary history professor James P. Shenton.
