The John Jay Awards have been presented to members of the Columbia College family for distinguished professional achievement since 1979 (with a hiatus for the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21). Hosted by the Columbia College Alumni Association. The awards are highlighted by a fancy dinner each year, the proceeds of which help to support the John Jay Scholars program.
Traditionally, the award only went to a Columbia College graduate. In 2004, Columbia parent and major donor Peter Kalikow was announced as the first non-alumni honoree. Professor Michael Rosenthal refused to attend the dinner in protest, and several Spectator editorials were written decrying the "selling" of an alumni honor. Since then, the award has returned to being exclusively alumni. [1]
