Boston University is, shockingly, a university in Boston. It's larger and more cosmopolitan than its suburban rival, Boston College, and sort of plays Columbia to BC's Princeton.
Unfortunately, there's a less favorable analogy to be made as well: Boston University is to Harvard what New York University is to Columbia. Still, BU students are socio-economically diverse and actually learn something, unlike those at NYU.
