Daniel D. Tompkins CC 1795 is the only Columbia alumnus, and the only affiliate of Columbia College, to have served as Vice President of the United States. Tompkins was also, like many politically-inclined Columbia alumni, the Governor of New York. Tompkins County and Tompkins Square Park are named for him. Presumably Tompkins Hall on Claremont Avenue (the name of 21 Claremont for a period) was named for him.
