Charles Van Doren MA '47 PhD '55 was the son of notable Columbia professor Mark Van Doren and the source of the Quiz Show scandal in 1959. He earned a liberal arts degree from St. John's College, where the curriculum is a derivation of the Columbia Core, and then moved to Columbia to study for a masters in astroyphysics. He completed his PhD in English, however.
