Columbia and its affiliates have many Departments of Instruction into which faculty are organised.
Columbia University departments
According to some sources, there are 79 departments. To date we at WikiCU have identified 78 departments as follows:
- 30 Faculty of Arts and Sciences departments (844, Est. 1880), comprising:
- 13 humanities departments (327)
- 6 social sciences departments (218), including the School of International and Public Affairs
- 9 natural sciences departments (217)
- School of Continuing Education (19)
- School of the Arts (63)
- 14 Morningside professional departments (468), comprising:
- 9 Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science departments (152)
- Columbia Business School (131)
- Columbia Law School (89, Est. 1858)
- School of Social Work (43, Est. 1898)
- Graduate School of Journalism (30, Est. 1912)
- Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (23, Est. 1896)
- 33 Columbia University Medical Center departments (2163), comprising:
- Department of Physical Education (aka Columbia Athletics) (70) - unaffiliated with any faculty
Barnard College departments
Barnard College has its own versions of many of Columbia University's departments. These have not generally been written about on WikiCU to date (as of Dec 2013), but those that have been are listed in this category.
In a few cases, Barnard has departments that Columbia does not, and therefore the Barnard version forms the primary undergraduate department. Known such cases are:
Conversely, Barnard sometimes has no equivalent of the Columbia University department, for example in Computer Science and Statistics.
