Oliver Wolcott Gibbs CC 1841 was one of the most famous early American chemists. In what came to be known as the Gibbs Affair, he was denied a position at Columbia by the trustees due to his Unitarian faith. He went on to be very successful at Harvard.
While he was a student at Columbia, Gibbs was a member of Philo.
