The Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching has been awarded to five members of the Columbia faculty and three graduate students in any department since 1996. Unlike many other teaching awards at Columbia, the Presidential awards are not limited to any school and can be awarded to a faculty member in any department at any school in the Columbia Corporation (i.e. the university proper, not its affiliates).

Each fall the president of the university writes to the faculty and students of the university seeking nominations. Nominations can be submitted at any team at the award's website.

Recipients are recognized at University Commencement as "Teaching Award Recipients".
