Bacchanal is Columbia's annual 'party week', when we pretend we're actually a state school. Conveniently occurs at the end of spring semester when the weather is nice, but papers are due. Culminates with the Concert on the Steps.

It is widely believed that Baccahanal is a poor copy of other universities' "Spring Fling" festivities.

Also, it used to be heavily alcohol-oriented, until the administration cracked down.

Recognition

Bacchanal Events is the name of the club that organizes the events. It was formerly called Columbia Special Events before a name change under administrative pressure to avoid confusion with university-wide official events. The club is recognized by ABC, despite fulfilling a role traditionally fulfilled by student councils at other schools. It is by far the largest group by allocation within ABC, though it has struggled in recent years to maintain membership in the face of increasingly strict alcohol policies.

At the beginning of 2008, Columbia Concerts, the planner of the Concert on the Steps, was officially incorporated into Bacchanal.
