The Master of Arts (MA) degree is awarded by a number of Columbia graduate schools, including GSAS (in about 50 disciplines covering the humanities and social sciences) and the Journalism School (as a mid-career program).
Unlike the MS or MFA, it is not a specialized professional degree and is usually meant to indicate the level to which one has studied a subject rather than expertise in any given skill.
