Kathryn Bigelow SoA '81 won the 2010 Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Director, being the first ever woman to win it. She was also only the fourth woman to be nominated for an award in this category. Her film The Hurt Locker also won Best Picture, ensuring she totally pwned ex-husband James Cameron and his Avatar.
At Columbia, she earned her MFA in film and studied with semioticists in the French Department.
