Herbert Deane CC '42 PhD '?? was Vice Provost of the university as well as a professor of political science.
Deane graduated from Columbia valedictorian and Phi Beta Kappa before serving in the navy during World War II. He was later Vice Dean of the graduate faculties from 1963 to 1967 and became Vice Provost in 1968. He retired in 1984 and died in 1991. In 1990, he had won the Award for Excellence of Columbia's Graduate Faculties Alumni Association.
