- The Alexander Hamilton Medal and an honorary degree are awarded to Meyer Schapiro, and a chair in Art History is created in his name
May: "Woodring Report" on reorganization of the Arts and Sciences submitted to Provost De Bary; members of committee split on recommendations
August 8: Boris Yavitz succeeds Louis Volpe as Dean of the Business School
August: Wes Hennessey steps down as Dean of the School of Engineering; Ralph Schwarz as Acting Dean
November: College Dean Peter Pouncey permits the College Faculty to vote to have the College accept women; President McGill objects. On December 13, the trustees dissociate themselves from the College Faculty's vote to admit women into the College; they take the view "that Barnard would not survive" such a unilateral action.
December: Robert Belknap named Acting Dean of Columbia College following Pouncey's resignation after falling out with President McGill
