- The University Lecture is established
- January 3: The American Council of Education ratings of research universities show a sharp decline in Columbia's departmental standings
- January 10: President McGill presents a 5-Year Austerity Program, designed to bring budget into balance by 1973-74
- April 13: William Theodore de Bary recplaces Polycarp Kusch as Vice President and university provost
- June 20: Graduate Dean George Fraenkel announces the closing of the Lingusitics Department
- October 13: The university announces a bequest of $5,000,000 from J. C. Levi; the gift is unrestricted as to its use except that it is not for a building
