Harry Carman CC '?? was the fourth Dean of Columbia College. A champion of the Core Curriculum, he was very popular among students. He advised many, including Jacques Barzun, and even helped with their expenses. An agricultural historian, he maintained a working farm upstate even while dean. He was compelled to retire as dean at age 65, but remained teaching for three more years.

Carman Hall is named after him.
