- February 5: Dramatic Ruggles murder-suicide takes place, leaves two students dead
- May: Brian Dennehy speaks at Columbia College Class Day
Summer
- August: Richard Axel's patents, which generated $100 million a year for Columbia, expire
Fall
- Initiation of the First Year Run during NSOP
- New School of the Arts building is planned
- Two of 10 Things I Hate About You's cast members, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, are enrolled. Stiles as a year 13 and Gordon-Levitt as a university level.
