  • William Harris succeeds Benjamin Moore as college president
  • Creation of the post of Provost to compensate John Mitchell Mason for not gaining the presidency
  • The "Riotous Commencement", in which students violently protested the faculty's decision not to confer a degree upon John Stevenson, who had inserted objectionable words into his commencement speech.
