1880 in Columbia history:

  • The first Graduate Faculty, that of Political Science is established. It is the first political science department in the country. Trustee Samuel Ruggles considered the event to mark the birth of Columbia as a university, although it would not be called such for over a decade more.
  • The first iteration of Hamilton Hall, on the Midtown campus, is built.
