1889 in Columbia history:
- Establishent of the all-female Barnard College when the trustees turn down President Barnard's proposal for a co-educational Columbia College. The initial Barnard facility was a small townhouse, perhaps located where today's Rockefeller Center stands.
- President Barnard ends his 25-year tenure. He is succeeded by Seth Low.
