Zora Neale Hurston
Zora Neale Hurston B '27 was a writer of the Harlem Renaissance. Originally enrolled at Howard University, she left after two years because she could not support herself. Later, Barnard offered her a scholarship, and she used the opportunity to study with famed anthropologists Franz Boas and Ruth Benedict across the street, as well as with classmate (and later famed anthropologist herself) Margaret Mead.
