Trademarks are words, phrases, symbols or designs, or a combination of those elements that identify a source of goods or services. While generally thought of in terms of "brand" or "identity", the purpose of a trademark is to indicate the source or origin of goods or services in the marketplace. A trademark right only exists when the mark is "used in commerce."
Columbia has secured trademark rights in a number designs primarily in conjunction with two categories of goods or services: 1) educational services and 2) apparel.
