See also Wikipedia's article about "Washington Square Park".

Washington Square Park is a park in the middle of Greenwich Village, centered on the Washington Memorial Arch, a monument that looks a lot like the Arc de Triomphe. The park is NYU's front equivalent of Columbia's South Lawn, except that as a public park, NYU kids share it with (in increasing numbers) hipsters, aging hippies, drug dealers, and the homeless. The NYPD maintains menacing "command post" vehicles around the perimeter.

To the east of the Washington Memorial Arch, there is a small monument with fascist symbols on it such as a fasces.
