Let's Get Ready! (LGR) provides free SAT tutoring and college admissions help to high school students in low income districts. It is part of a national organization that began at Harvard in 1998.
Contents
Services
LGR's goal is to provide low income students with the same information and preparation that wealthier students enjoy when applying to colleges, including:
- SAT tutoring
- College search tips
- Scholarship application tips
- College essay editing
Coaching
Each coach picks a subject to tutor (either Math or Verbal) or volunteers for weekend office hours outside the normal tutoring sessions.
Training
New coaches are trained at the start of the semester about teaching techniques and giving refreshers on the college admissions process. The training consists of 1-2 daytime sessions on weekends.
Time commitment
Each session takes 3 hours, including transit time to and from the tutoring location. Though it's possible to "wing it", it's generally recommended that coaches spend an hour or two prior to their session preparing for the class.
Teaching material
Coaches are provided with full lesson plans and exercises to go over in class, though they are permitted to use any material they like to teach their students the material.
Students
The classes are small, each consisting of 2-6 students. The students are generally pretty enthusiastic, since all LGR students are there voluntarily and tend to be the types that want to learn.
