Justus Buchler PhD '38 was a Columbia philosopher. After earning his doctorate with a dissertation on "Charles Peirce's Empiricism," he became an instructor in 1939, an associate professor in 1950, and a full professor in 1956. He was later chairman of the Philosophy Department before jumping ship to teach at SUNY Stony Brook. In 1973, he was awarded the Butler Medal.
