- 150th anniversairy of the foundation of King's College
- Construction of Hartley Hall, the first residence hall on the Morningside Heights campus
- Formation of the Columbia University Marching Band
- The opening of the IRT 1/9 subway station brings mass transit to Morningside Heights, spurring dense residential development in the region of Columbia's new campus
- Philosopher John Dewey joins the Columbia faculty, where he would remain for over 25 years
- September: Inaugural King's Crown Awards given out.
