The Bunner Prize for critical writing on American literature is awarded by the English Department in memory of Henry Cuyler Bunner, a novelist who wanted to attend Columbia but was "regretfully unable" to. It was established in 1896. This award recognizes Columbia degree candidates who present the best essay on any topic dealing with American literature. Senior essays on an American topic will automatically be considered for this award.
