1784 in Columbia history:

• Thanks to the advocacy of Alexander Hamilton and John Jay, King's College reopens with the patriotic name Columbia College. It is controlled, however, by the New York State Board of Regents, making it, in effect, a public institution, a condition that would last until 1787.
