Ed Rice CC '40 was a journalist who founded the Catholic Jubilee magazine, wrote over twenty books, and was later known for his photojournalism.

He was accepted at Harvard as well as Columbia, and went to the latter so his parents could keep an eye on him - and make sure he did not "become an artist". His mother died soon after, and he defied her wishes, taking art courses. Rice continued to paint throughout his life.

While at Columbia, he worked on Jester and was friends with Thomas Merton, Ad Reinhardt, Robert Lax, and Robert Giroux.
