Robert Lax CC '38 was a poet. At Columbia, he worked on Jester and befriended such people as Thomas Merton, Ad Reinhardt, and Ed Rice. In his studies, he was close to Mark Van Doren.

Among his strange activities was sneaking in and harboring a Buddhist monk in his Furnald room with roommate Seymour Freedgood. This was strictly against the rules, but possible, according to Ed Rice, because the little monk "made himself invisible when the cleaning women came into the room".
