Professor of Germanic languages and chairman of the department at Columbia, joined Columbia in 1959 and remained teaching until his untimely death, in 1983, at the age of 51. He was also the director of Deutsches Haus. In 1976, he received the Mark Van Doren Award, given annually by the university students.
