Carlton Joseph Huntley Hayes CC 1904 PhD '?? was one of the most preeminent Columbia historians of the first half of the 20th century. A specialist in modern Europe, he served in military intelligence during the First World War, before being named as a full professor in 1919. He served as US ambassador to Spain during the Second World War. Many believed he was far too cozy with the Franco regime at the time.
